Kelp forest, whale water, harbor boats, Cannery Row brick, and adobe courtyards

MontereyCalifornia

A Pacific harbor where luminous kelp forests, sea otters, whale-rich water, Cannery Row brick, and early California adobes meet within a few walkable miles.

The Monterey Bay stay

Give marine life a full day, then follow the waterfront history

The Aquarium reveals the bay below the surface. Whale-watching boats and harbor overlooks bring the living ocean into view. Cannery Row and Old Monterey explain how fishing, trade, statehood, tourism, science, and conservation reshaped the same shore.

Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail beside cypress and rocky water
The trail joins the harbor, Cannery Row, Aquarium, wildlife viewpoints, and nearby Pacific Grove shore, while boat times and Aquarium admission still need current checks.

Fishing boats and sailboats in Monterey Harbor

A working harbor beside deep water

Monterey Bay's deep canyon begins near Moss Landing

The Monterey Submarine Canyon's head lies near Moss Landing in central Monterey Bay, north of Monterey Harbor. Deep water, seasonal currents, and coastal habitats support the wider bay's marine food web, though no trip guarantees a species or smooth water. Monterey Harbor still offers fishing boats, sea lions, pelicans, kelp-bed otter habitat, and wharf views from shore.

Choose a wildlife outing

Two-night visit

Aquarium Saturday, wildlife or Old Monterey Sunday

Two nights create one complete Aquarium day plus flexible arrival and departure half-days. Add a third night for Carmel, Point Lobos, or a full 17-Mile Drive day. Treat Big Sur as a separate extension and check current Caltrans, fire, and incident notices before relying on Highway 1 access.
